What to Do When Your Child Has a Cavity

Posted on July 10, 2023

If you fear that your child has a cavity, you’re not alone. According to the CDC, by the age of eight, 52% of all children have had a cavity. If you’re worried that your child might have a cavity, it’s time to give your family dentist a call. Below are a few steps to take when your child has a cavity.

Give Your Family Dentist a Call

The first thing to do when you think your child has a cavity, is give your dentist a call. They’ll schedule an appointment and give you additional instructions over the phone. Once the appointment’s been made, the next step is to help keep your child calm. Cavities can cause a lot of pain, and your child might not know how to react. Keeping them calm and collected can help you keep the situation under control.

Administer an Age-Appropriate Pain Reliever

No parent wants to see their child suffer, so seeing them with a toothache can be difficult. Depending on your child’s age, weight, and allergy status, give them an appropriate pain reliever. Over-the-counter medicines are effective for tooth pain. Be sure to follow all dosage guidance carefully when administering the medication. Your child could also find relief through gum-numbing gels and tinctures. If your child is very young or has had an allergic reaction to medications, it’s best to check with their doctor before giving them anything. Proceed carefully when giving a child any type of medication or pain reliever.

Keep the Area Clean

As much as your child may tell you their tooth hurts, it’s still important to keep the area clean. If it’s too sensitive to floss around the tooth, be sure to brush the tooth and the surrounding area. When they’re unable to tolerate any brushing or flossing, try mouthwash. While not ideal, mouthwash will help to keep the mouth free of harmful bacteria. Keeping the tooth clean and your child as calm as possible will help your dentist provide fast and effective treatment. Cavities are never fun, but they’re a good way to explain the importance of dental health to your child.
